What is Syphilis ?

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It spreads through sexual contact and from mother to baby during pregnancy. If untreated, it progresses through stages and can damage the brain, nerves, heart, eyes, and other organs. Early diagnosis and treatment can completely cure syphilis.

How common is syphilis in Nepal?

Syphilis is one of the common STD  in Nepal  and is common in the general population. However, it is more frequently seen in people with high-risk sexual behavior and other STI risk factors. Because early syphilis may cause mild or no symptoms, testing is important for anyone with possible exposure, symptoms, or pregnancy.

What are the symptoms of syphilis?

  • Primary syphilis: Painless sore (chancre) at the site of infection, swollen lymph nodes.
  • Secondary syphilis: Rash (often on palms and soles), fever, sore throat, swollen glands, mouth sores, patchy hair loss, fatigue.
  • Latent syphilis: No symptoms, but the infection remains in the body.
  • Tertiary syphilis: Damage to the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, blood vessels, and other organs if left untreated.

Many people usually have symptoms at all and still transmit the disease so early testing and diagnosis is important.

How syphilis is diagnosed ?

Syphilis is diagnosed with blood tests. Initial screening is commonly performed using VDRL or RPR, and positive results are confirmed with TPHA test. In some cases, additional tests such as FTA-ABS or CSF examination (when neurosyphilis is suspected) may be needed. Early testing allows prompt treatment and helps prevent complications and transmission.
